Enrichment Opportunities

There are many wonderful opportunities for kids to stay actively learning and playing all year long. Here is a list of SOME of the enrichment resources for highly capable students in the Seattle area.

NWGCA General Resource List http://www.nwgca.org/resources.html --The Northwest Gifted Child Association is a nice resource for parent and student support. They sponsor local lectures, social events, and online enrichment opportunities for students

WISE (Western Institute for Scholarly Education) www.wisecamps.com--chemistry and math camps for students grade 3-10. This summer's camp will be hosted ONLINE

Northwestern University's Online CTD Program https://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/grade-4-grade-8 The university has a large variety of workshops available to older elementary age students.

The Greater Seattle Bureau of Fearless Ideas http://fearlessideas.org/ --kids age 6 to 18 can explore the written and spoken word as they become even more skilled at sharing their ideas. The “Bureau” offers workshops, publishing parties, after-school tutoring--all kinds of great stuff related to writing and creative thinking

Digipen Summer Programs https://www.digipen.edu/academics/youth-and-adult-programs/projectfun --this somewhat expensive camp focuses on exploring art and technology through hands-on projects

Burke Museum http://www.burkemuseum.org/programs/camps --summer, winter, and spring break camps related to sciences such as anthropology, archeology, and paleontology (to name a few).

UW Arboretum programs http://depts.washington.edu/uwbg/education/Youth/summer.shtml--help your child bring out the naturalist inside. Week long classes for kids in K-3 and 4-6 grades

Destination Imagination https://www.destinationimagination.org/ --the worlds largest creative problem solving organization has had strong support on Mercer Island since Mr. Headlee introduced it to the district 14 years ago. Students form teams in the fall and then complete a long term challenge (which are complex and require a lot of teamwork and deep thinking) and a series of instant challenges that help students build the capacity to think quickly, work as a team, and communicate their ideas in a clear manner. West Mercer teams will be organized in October 2020.
