Dear Mercer Island Community,

The Mercer Island community has not been immune from the challenges and grief that accompany childhood cancer diagnoses.

We are asking MISD students, staff, and community members to wear gold on Thursday, September 17 to support members of our community who are contending with cancer.

Students and staff can stop by their school office on Wednesday, September 16 to pick up a gold ribbon to wear on September 17 to show their support. We will be documenting this support on District social platforms.

The gold ribbons are being provided to students and staff by Kyra’s Hope Foundation.

The last academic year was a challenging one, as we lost two students to cancer. Currently, we have additional students battling various forms of cancer. September is recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Whether or not you know these students and their families, this is an opportunity for our community to unite in support of children and families affected by this life-changing illness.

Childhood cancer touches the lives of too many, and, by raising awareness, we can help shine a light on the need for continued research, support, and compassion.

You may show support in many ways, including the following:

  • Wear or display gold, the adopted color representing childhood cancer awareness.
  • Support local initiatives and organizations dedicated to helping children with cancer and their families.
  • Educate yourself about the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer to promote early detection.
  • Advocate for increased funding and research for childhood cancer treatments and cures.

Thank you for your support of Mercer Island students and families

Sincerely,

MISD Communications
